Asia has more ranked universities than any other region in the world — 565 of them, ahead of Europe’s 487 and the Americas’ 358 — and it added more newcomers this year than every other region combined. The QS World University Rankings: Asia 2026 assessed 1,526 institutions across 25 locations, the largest edition QS has ever produced.

What the top of that table shows is a region that has stopped competing for a share of the world’s students and started setting the terms. Hong Kong placed five universities in the top ten, its strongest showing ever; mainland China three; Singapore two, both inside the global top twelve. What follows is the top three places, in order. That means four universities, because Singapore’s two share third — with where they are, what they teach best, and a graduate whose name you are likely to recognise.

01 The University of Hong Kong

Asia’s oldest university in continuous operation opened in 1911 on a hillside above Pokfulam, and holds the top position in the QS Asia table for a second consecutive year. Its medical faculty is the oldest part of the institution and still the part that defines it: the predecessor college taught a young Sun Yat-sen before he went on to found the Republic of China, and the dental school has ranked at or near the top of the world for years.

What parents notice is the teaching language. Nearly everything at HKU is delivered in English, which removes the year of language preparation a mainland or Korean campus usually requires. What students notice is the alumni list, which includes Ann Hui, who received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at Venice in 2020.

02 Peking University

Peking University is the intellectual conscience of modern China. The New Culture Movement took shape here in 1919, and it remains the place where the country argues with itself. Guanghua and the economics faculty draw most international applicants, but its reputation was built on the humanities.

Its most consequential graduate studied pharmacology here in the 1950s. Tu Youyou spent years searching classical Chinese medical texts for a malaria treatment, extracted artemisinin from sweet wormwood, and volunteered as the first human subject to test it. Artemisinin is now the standard treatment worldwide and has saved millions of lives. In 2015 she became the first mainland Chinese scientist to win a Nobel Prize in a scientific category — without a doctorate, a medical degree, or any training abroad.

NTU shares third place with its neighbour across the island. Singapore posted the region’s best average scores this year for employer reputation, international faculty and exchange. The engineering school is the centre of gravity, built on materials science, electrical engineering and, more recently, artificial intelligence.

Its graduates spread further than the engineering reputation suggests. Stefanie Sun finished a degree here before selling more than thirty million records across the Chinese-speaking world.

NUS is the university Singapore built itself around, and its graduates have carried that reach outward. Tommy Koh, the only first-class honours graduate in its pioneer law class of 1961, went on to preside over the UN Conference on the Law of the Sea and was named a Champion of the Earth by the UN Environment Programme.

The modern university is strongest where Singapore is strongest — computing, engineering and business — and runs year-long residencies placing undergraduates inside startups in Silicon Valley, Shenzhen and Jakarta. Applications from across Southeast Asia have been climbing even as traditional destinations in the West tighten their student visa rules.

Just Outside

Fifth to eleventh

The numbers thin out slowly below the top three. Fifth is Fudan University in Shanghai, whose journalism school is the oldest in China and whose international relations faculty supplied a generation of the country’s diplomats. Sixth is the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, which admitted its first students only in 1991 and whose graduate Frank Wang founded the drone maker DJI on the strength of an undergraduate thesis.

City University of Hong Kong and the Chinese University of Hong Kong share seventh. Tsinghua University is ninth, and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University tenth — the place a design student should look first, and where Wong Kar-wai studied graphic design. Eleventh is Yonsei University in Seoul, the highest-ranked institution in South Korea, a country with 103 ranked universities this year and fifteen inside the Asian top hundred.

• Faculty–student ratio — 10 per cent.
• Citations per paper and international research network — 10 per cent each.

• International faculty and students, and inbound and outbound exchange — 2.5 per cent each.
